The big winner at the EE British Academy Cinema and Television Arts Awards in London on Sunday night was the German-language film “All Quiet on the Western Front,” which is set in the trenches of World War I. This was a surprise to this year’s awards season.

The Netflix film won the award for best picture during the ceremony, which is known as the BAFTAs. The anti-war movie triumphed over four more high-profile releases, including Michelle Yeoh’s sci-fi adventure “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and Martin McDonagh’s dark comedy “The Banshees of Inisherin,” which is about a friendship that ends on a small island.

Also, the BAFTA Award best film 2023 triumphed over Todd Field’s drama “Tár.” It centers on a conductor accused of sexual harassment, and Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” biopic.

“All Quiet on the Western Front” was based on the 1929 novel of the same name by Erich Maria Remarque. And it also took home six other honors, including best director, best adapted screenplay, and best foreign language picture.

Berger appeared overwhelmed by the victories at the ceremony. He emphasized the film’s antiwar theme and Russia’s continuing invasion of Ukraine when winning the prize for best adapted script.

Nazi Germany banned the book

The book was initially published as a novel in early 1929 after first appearing around the end of 1928 in the German newspaper Vossische Zeitung.

The book is available into 26 other languages. Within months, approximately 500,000 copies were sold in Germany alone.

The book and its follow-up, “The Journey Back,” which came out a year later, were among the works that Nazi Germany forbade.

The Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson-starrer “The Banshees of Inisherin” won four awards. That included best supporting actor for Barry Keoghan and best supporting actress for Kerry Condon, who was temporarily disqualified from receiving the honor due to a misunderstanding.

The biopic film describled the life of the renowned performer and actor known as the “King of Rock and Roll”. It received the leading actor award for Austin Butler’s portrayal of “Elvis.”

Butler accepted his prize and remarked on stage, “This means the world to me.”

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts presents the BAFTA Award for Best Film at the British Academy Film Awards each year. Films from any country can be nominated, though British films are recognized in the category BAFTA Award for Best British Film and foreign-language films (since 1983) in the category BAFTA Award for Best Film Not in the English Language. As a result, a film has been nominated in both of these categories on multiple occasions.

There has only been one tie for Best Film Award. Meanwhile, Ballad of a Soldier tied with The Hustler for Best Film From Any Source in 1962. Throughout the category’s history, the award has gone to the director(s), producer(s), or both.
